Faster Production of PalmSHIELD’s Gorilla Hinges for Architectural Screening
State of the art technology used to quickly produce hinges for architectural screen fencing and wall
Having created the national standard for architectural screen fencing and wall, PalmSHIELD takes customer feedback seriously. Conversing with clients allows us to better tweak existing product and accessory designs—and pinpoint equipment necessary for improving production. Take, for instance, our signature Gorilla Hinges. Used to install and operate our gates, these hinges debuted over ten years ago and—we are proud to say—haven’t failed a customer to date. (Not once have we heard of a case wherein the gate fell from its respective post.) That said, customers occasionally contacted us to report an installation inconvenience: the field-welding necessary to attach these hinges to their posts. So, earlier this year, our team swung into action with an updated design eliminating this inconvenience.
Clients in the past had to either depend on an in-house welding professional or outsource engineers to grind, weld, and touch up the Gorilla Hinges. These newly designed hinges, however, are mechanically fastened to their posts—installed in a shorter (and less costly) amount of time. The lack of welding also helps avoid causing damage to the screening’s powder-coated finish. (After all, part of PalmSHIELD’s widespread appeal is that our mechanical equipment screens can be colored to match surrounding building aesthetics, represent logos, etc.) Our Gorilla Hinges are adjustable, sporting a ¾” range of up-and-down travel. With all of our gate posts tapped for the hinge bolts and long adjustable slots, you may adjust your hinges up and down over 1½” of travel.
With the advancement of design comes the need for upgraded equipment and techniques. PalmSHIELD’s Gorilla Hinges in the past were manufactured by hand, with an average of fifteen minutes required to finish each hinge. To speed up production without sacrificing quality, we recently purchased a HAAS Mini Mill. With this machine’s state of the art capabilities, we now manufacture a single pair of hinges in about six minutes! Check out PalmSHIELD’s latest video to see the HAAS Mini Mill in action—as it converts two pieces of metal into a consummate pair of Gorilla Hinges ready for installation!
